As I continue my deep dive into cooking with coffee, I thought about combining two of my favorite things: coffee (duh) and sweet potato fries.

I’m the only person in my family with a professed love of sweet potato fries. Everyone else turns up their nose to all things sweet potato.

But I’m plotting to shift their allegiance from the russet potato to the sweet potato, and this recipe (along with the sweet potato crostini recipe from our Banish the Holiday Hangries post) is moving that plan along nicely. More on that later.

Coffee Roasted Sweet Potato Fries

Confession: I hacked this recipe. What I made is a portion of a Coffee Roasted Sweet Potato Desert Fries with Chocolate Sauce recipe.

But I was planning to eat this with steak so I skipped the chocolate/dessert part.

You know what? You can leave that part out and have a delicious and fairly simple coffee-infused side dish.

Second confession: I made these in my air fryer and not in the oven as specified in the recipe.

Why? Because I had just gotten the air fryer and I really, really wanted to play with it.

But, for those of you without an air fryer, these will still be delicious cooked in the oven.

While I was making these fries, my daughter asked the following questions/made the following statements:

“Why are you making sweet potato fries? No one likes them.” The “no one” she was referring to is her.

“Why would you put coffee on them? That doesn’t sound good.” Keep in mind, it doesn’t sound good to her.

One of the things I’m trying to do with Your Mood Your Food is to get home cooks out of their recipe rut and to get them to try new things.

Sometimes you don’t know if you like something until you try it!

Enter the Coffee Roasted Sweet Potato Fries.

I made my daughter try them.

Keep reading to see what she thought.

Four things to know about the Coffee Roasted Sweet Potato Fries recipe:

  • I used finely ground fresh decaf Illy Coffee to make these fries. The recipe called for coffee grounds, but I didn’t have any so I opted for fresh. I chose decaf because I was making these as part of my dinner and didn’t want the caffeine. You’ll get a stronger coffee punch if you use regular coffee.
  • I made half of a batch of the fries because “I’m the only one who likes sweet potatoes.” This means I used one full sweet potato–which equals about 1 1/2 to 2 servings.
  • Consistent cuts on the fries = consistent cooking. Pay attention to your cuts when you’re prepping the sweet potato. You really want the fries to be as evenly sized as possible so they cook at the same rate.
  • As I mentioned, I made these in my air fryer but they will be equally delicious if you make them in your oven. I cooked my fries at 350°/Air Fry for about 15 minutes.

So, did I make my daughter try these fries? Of course, I did! And she didn’t even put up much of a fuss about it.

What did she think?

SHE LIKED THEM! But noted, “I like these, but I don’t like sweet potatoes.”

So, I point out that she now likes three sweet potato recipes I’ve made. These sweet potato fries along with both of the sweet potato crostini from our Banish the Holiday Hangries post.

Progress…

Soon she’ll be fully on the sweet potato side.
