It’s Monday. Which means Margaritas.

And it’s fall. Which means pumpkin.

“Surely she isn’t considering combining the two,” you think.

Of course I am!

And why not? Margaritas are the perfect cocktail to experiment with and they can handle a whole range of flavors.

Including pumpkin.

So, here we go!

Fair warning: My taste-tester was skeptical when I mentioned pumpkin and margarita in the same sentence, but she did her duty and tried it. Keep reading to see what she thought.

Simple to Make−The Great Pumpkin Margarita

Get the recipe from: My Overactive Late Night Brain

I had some leftover pumpkin puree from a few other recipes I made and didn’t want it to go to waste, but I wasn’t sure what to do with it.

So, I stewed on it for a bit.

And then, late one night, it dawned on me.

Why not make a pumpkin margarita?

It’s a favorite fall flavor and margaritas can handle whatever you throw at them, so why not!

And it uses up some of the leftover pumpkin puree from all those fall recipes we make. Because the amount needed for any recipe is NEVER equal to the amount of pumpkin puree in the can.

Ingredients (Makes 2 cocktails):

Note: The base recipe for a classic margarita typically calls for Grand Marnier or Cointreau (Triple Sec). I’m not a huge fan of either of those, so for this margarita, I’m substituting freshly-squeezed orange juice. It’s brighter and lighter than either Grand Marnier or Cointreau and I think it works wonderfully to offset the pumpkin puree.

  • 4 oz Hornito’s Plata Tequila
  • 1/2 C. freshly-squeezed orange juice (1 large or 2 small oranges)
  • 1/2 C. freshly-squeezed lime juice (about 2 limes)
  • 4 T. pumpkin puree (NOT pumpkin pie filling)
  • 1 t. pumpkin pie spice
  • Zest of one orange
  • Sugar for rim of glasses
  • Ice
  • Orange and/or lime slices for garnish
The Great Pumpkin Margarita Ingredients

Instructions:

  • Pour some sugar on a plate and then grate orange zest into the sugar. The zest is moist so you will need to mix it with your fingers to incorporate it into the sugar. Set aside.
  • Juice the orange(s) and set aside.
  • Juice the limes and set aside.
  • Use one of the juiced lime wedges to rim your glasses, then dip the glasses into the orange sugar mixture.
Rim the glasses with the orange sugar mixture.
  • In a cocktail shaker, add the tequila, freshly-squeezed orange and lime juice, pumpkin puree, and pumpkin pie spice. Add ice to fill. Cover and shake to mix (approximately 20-30 seconds).
  • Fill your cocktail glasses with ice and strain the margarita into the glasses.
  • Garnish with orange and/or lime slices.
It’s The Great Pumpkin Margarita!
